Civil engineering work begins
April 5, 2017 – April 4 saw the first groundbreaking ceremony for the Southern “Überseequartier” (Overseas Quarter) in the HafenCity district. Olaf Scholz, Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Christophe Cuvillier, and Olivier Nougarou, both the Co-CEO of Unibail-Rodamco, attended the official ceremony, at which together with several invited guests they celebrated the start of construction work. Across a gross surface area of approx. 265,000 m² a complex featuring a mix of retail, housing, entertainment, cruise liner terminal, hotel .and offices, is due for completion by around 2021. All the buildings will boast the Gold HafenCity ecolabel.
WTM is responsible for planning the structural engineering and the excavation pit for the entire Southern “Überseequartier”. The complex will have two underground parking decks. The location on the banks of the tidal river Elbe requires a watertight trough excavation pit and additional flood prevention measures in the event of a storm triggering a tidal bore.
